Harriet Caroline Pierce Johnson 1834-1916

Harriet Caroline Pierce was the daughter of Gibson and Esther Nichols Pierce, born May 15, 1834 in North Carolina. She married Stephen Johnson in 1851 in Wake County, North Carolina. Stephen was the son of John and Nancy Johnson. By 1856, the couple was in Itawamba County with their two small children.

I have a picture somewhere of Harriet's great-granddaughter, Pearl Faye Johnson, in a bonnet much like the one Harriet is wearing. Pearl was my husband's grandmother, and she could sew and craft with the best of them. Harriet was 83 when she died on July 24, 1916. Pearl Johnson Dulaney was 82 when she died December 24, 1997. Imagine the changes each of them saw in their lifetime. I don't think we can equal them today.

The grave marker pictured is from Harriet's grave in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Mona,
It is amazing how many Johnsons resemble Harriet. If Pearl's brother James Johnson put that bonnet on they would be twins.

Don, that is funny! I'm not sure that James would agree however!

Have any of you lady readers ever worn one of these bonnets? Well, I believe my grandmother had one to match everyone of her "everyday dresses" - those she wore on the farm and I always wanted to try one on, but since she worked so hard at washing and stiffening those colorful "barnyard chapeaus", I never dared. We were vacationing in San Angelo, TX a few years ago and found some of the bonnets for sale at a sidewalk sale. I purchased one, and I can't figure out how a woman wearing one of those bonnets to keep the sun off their head and neck areas did it in the bright hot summer sun. I wore it down to the mail box one time, and my hair was soaking wet in just the few minutes I was wearing it in the hot Texas sun. It has become a "tree topper" for the hat rack!

What's truly amazing is how much Harriet Caroline looks like her brother John Ruffin Pearce, back in Wake Co., NC, and his son Ned Ruffin, and his son Ned Russell, and his son Ned Russell, Jr. and MY son Michael Pearce Gaudio! (Ned,Jr. is my brother). I can only assume that Gibson Pearce had a very strong "face" gene that he passed on to his descendants!
